About My Students

The students in this project are members of my homeroom. Our school has started a new program where students can choose the teacher and topic of study. More specifically, homeroom is student led. Ranging in age from 14 to 18, the students have chosen to use drones to learn about robotics and coding.

During a planning discussion, Preston proposed the idea for building and programming drones. He stated, " being able to build these kits will help me understand how drones work as well as the basics of programming. I could see the excitement in their eyes immediately.

Isaac said it would help them learn how robots and other machines work. It would be a great hands-on experience.

Amazeen has never built a drone and stated it would be a fun way to learn and be a great experience while Chris stated the project would help him decide if he wants to pursue this field of study as a career.

There is no doubt that developing a project like this one will certainly help my students. I am seeing a side of my students that I usually never see. They are becoming independent learners.

Our High School Robotics team is a self-funded extracurricular activity students can participate in year round. Our primary method of fundraising is to host VEX robotics tournaments with other teams. We are a relatively young team and are still growing and need additional equipment to host these tournaments. The VEX Robotics Competitions teach students so much more than building robots. For example, developing Engineering Notebooks, strategy, sportsmanship, design and programming.

In Their Own Words

We have a PA system, however, the microphone is terrible. We would like to get a nice wireless microphone setup. During the tournaments, an emcee travels from field to field announcing the matches for the audience. It makes for a better tournament experience when you can actually hear them clearly.

Students are given active roles while planning, organizing, setting up, hosting, and tearing down the tournament. Senior students assume leadership roles within the team and carrying out the tournament. From setting up fields, running and securing wires to streaming the matches live online, managing software and stepping in as emcee as needed.

We love robotics and without the proper equipment, our tournament cannot grow. The tournament fundraiser helps us cover expenses the team has for competing in other tournaments. We can focus more on the robots and not worry so much about how are we paying for all of this. Competitive robotics is expensive.
