Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The majority of the students in our school are disengaged students from low-income, urban families. The reasons for disengagement run the gamut from anxiety about learning to trauma in their lives. These issues have impacted their ability to learn, stay motivated or maintain focus in their work.
We serve at risk students in an urban high school from a variety of ethnic and socioeconomic backgrounds.
As a teacher, I try to maintain a welcoming environment for my students. This involves building strong relationships with them, providing them with the support and materials they need to be successful and stay engaged.
My Project
Participation is a major issue with a large portion of my students. It can take as long as 15 minutes to get students actively engaged in a classroom activity or assignment. Often times this disengagement can be attributed to a students ability to keep their work organized. Many students do not know where to begin. I would like to give my students a place in my classroom where they can organize their work and store it. I would like them to have dedicated folders for my class that they can personalize and keep with them.
On any given day I will find between five and ten assignments left on a desk or stashed in a drawer, right after the bell rings.
The most common reason I hear..."I didn't want to lose it." When it comes time to hand in an assignment, many students just can't seem to find their work. When a student completes an assignment, but can't find it to turn in, there is a very small chance they would be willing to do it again.
Students find much more success when they can keep track of their assignments. They just need help to get things organized and the materials to get started.
