Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach in a Title I, K-5 magnet school that educates more than 700 students. At my school, the students come from varied family backgrounds. Some live in traditional households, while others live with single parents, with extended family, or with a foster family. My students' economic situations are just as unique as their family dynamics, and more than sixty percent of our school qualifies for free lunch. A large percentage of our school population consists of English Language Learners.
My class includes students that are gifted and talented, special education, English language learners, and have social and emotional issues.
While they face many unique challenges and issues, all are eager to succeed and are hardworking scholars.
My Project
Many of my students struggle with writing. They require an adult to scribe what they are saying so that they can copy their ideas on to paper.
By providing them with microphone equipped headphone adapters, they can use speech-to-text applications to complete their writing independently on Chromebooks when using the headsets with microphones.
Google offers extensions that allow students to access writing. My students have tried this feature before and absolutely loved it! With these adapters, I will be fostering independence and exposing them to technology they may otherwise never have been able to experience.
We also need replacement headsets that will allow students to continue to listen to reading on the iPads and Chromebooks. Finally my students would benefit from another word work game that focuses on words that contain blends and digraphs. My hope is to foster a love for learning so students they can feel successful in their educational experience!
