What makes our school and students special? The students of course! They are passionate learners who show up ready to learn and be loved.
So let's not talk about the achievement gap, let's talk about the achievement potential - because my students have it!
Our school is located in the suburbs of Washington, D.C. Our population consists of 11.5% Asian, 30.6% African American, 26.6% Hispanic, 24.8% White, and 6.1% Multi-Race - a beautiful representation of the United States of America. Our FARMS (Free and Reduced Meals) rate is 37.9%.
My students walk through the doors every day with hope in their hearts because they know their teacher believes in them and will do all that she can to help them realize the potential they hold within. Even though they may face many obstacles, we know that they are obstacles and we will do our best and forget the rest!
My Project
Every classroom library needs to be filled with quality literature. The best way to grow readers - get them reading, reading, reading!
Students need to see themselves in the books in their classroom libraries.
They need to see what they can be, how they can be, that there are others out there just like them. These books will do just that for my students. To see a child's face light up when the characters in a book look just like them - that is one of the many miracles of teaching!
Titles from this list will be used during our daily read aloud time - the perfect way to make every student want to check it out themselves.
