"Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world." —Nelson Mandela
My students come from many different backgrounds.
I teach ESL students within my middle school classroom representing over 15 different countries. Many of our students are transient or refugees, and we have a number of students experiencing homelessness.
I am hoping this project will help my students to continue to celebrate the diversity within themselves and to feel empowered to succeed even when experiencing tumultuous times.
These books show an array of diverse characters and situations that reflect the diverse population in my classroom. I feel it is so important that students have book choices that not only reflect on their own experiences and culture, but that can teach them about others! Having good books with great stories that have characters that look and sound like my students can not only foster a life-long love of reading, but will build their self worth to know that they are important. I hope to build up my classroom library with titles that can reflect all of my student’s diverse backgrounds.
