Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Do you remember how you felt when you were in elementary school and your teacher was demonstrating how to use materials and you just couldn't see or she was reading aloud a picture book and you couldn't see the pictures? I bet you were frustrated because my students are.
Our school is a neighborhood school where many of the families have had all of their children go to our school.
In addition to neighborhood families, we also have many out of district families who choose to attend our school. In this coming year I have the great fortune of having siblings of previous students and some students that I have known since kindergarten.
My students are inquisitive and thrive when they can be actively involved in their learning. I incorporate literature into the majority of my lessons and we use many manipulatives in math. On Friday mornings we are scientists and spend the majority of the morning completing investigations and experiments.
My Project
The addition of a document camera to our classroom will enhance my students' learning in many ways. First, instead of having to scan printed material into the computer, I will be able to project any text onto the board and for all to see clearly. I will have the ability to point out text features, new vocabulary, details in illustrations or graphics. When I am teaching math and need to demonstrate how to use manipulatives I can use the same manipulatives that the students are and not copies made for an overhead projector or very small materials that are difficult for the students to see. Likewise during science I can demonstrate the appropriate use of materials that are often difficult to see because of their size. Most importantly my students will be able to show their work or demonstrate their understandings and the entire class will be able to see clearly.
Not being able to see what it is your teacher is trying to show you is frustrating.
Students who are frustrated often stop paying attention and give up. Then when they are required to complete a task they complete the task incorrectly leading to more frustration. Having the ability to clearly see material increases students' time on task and keeps them focused on learning. Most importantly my students will be able to share their successes with their classmates in a format where all can see.
