This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My idea for funding for my classroom is to provide some of my visually impaired first grade students with an overhead projection machine and screen to better serve their individual needs. I currently have 20 first grade students, 8 of whom wear eyeglasses. I teach in an economically depressed neighborhood so many (5) of my students have lost or broken their glasses and their parents do not have the resources to replace them. I have tried to use different colored chalk to make our board work more visible, but our blackboards are in such bad repair, the students cannot see anything that's written on them. I am hoping that someone will fund the purchase of an overhead and screen so that I will be able to display work on a nice white background that will be able to be magnified, allowing all students to see the work more clearly now. My students come from backgrounds in which many obstacles are in their paths - ethnicity, economics, cultural bias - and I feel sad for them that I can't provide a background for them in which the work is more accessible to them. Being able to see written work on an overhead projector and screen will open up a world of reading and writing for my students.
