In my classroom, we build a family environment where my students feel safe to share their successes and fears. My students have a large amount of anxiety when they are asked to read, as they struggle with learning disabilities. They want to be able to read independently.
My students struggle with specific learning disabilities including dyslexia.
Reading is a very stressful and difficult task but to receive help, the students feel like they have to single themselves out as different or stupid. Just trying to fit in is hard for any student in Jr. High. Imagine trying to fit in, but all of your classmates know that you can't read independently. This makes fitting in almost impossible and my students do not feel comfortable outside our safe classroom.
I want to give my students the ability to read independently and be able to take general education classes with the rest of their classmates. This will allow my students to fit in, make new friends, and enjoy school!
My Project
My students struggle to read and require assistance in the classroom when reading. Having to move to a small group so a teacher can read for you can be very embarrassing to a junior high student. I want to give my students a way to read independently at their desk just like all the other students in the classroom.
Giving a student the skill of reading independently opens up their world to magic.
C-Reader Pens allow students to be able to receive reading assistance without being singled out. The C-Reader Pen looks like a small MP3 player, and any ear-buds can be attached. The student uses the pen to scan the text they want to read, then the C-Reader reads for the student.
This project has the potential to change struggling readers' lives. These students will no longer have to be placed in resource rooms, but will actually be able to take classes with the general education population. No more separation or seclusion!
