I teach an amazing range of students with identified learning disabilities in math and/or reading. Some range from mild to more severe but each student works very hard every day. In my opinion, they have to work twice as hard to understand content and overcome their learning disabilities. They are resilient and determined. They deserve the most efficient and effective teaching practices, resources, and learning environment.
As I teacher, I have to find creative, multisensory ways to teach current standards as well as fill in any gaps they have from previous grades.
Because of their learning disabilities, my students need specially designed instruction, hands-on materials, and repeated practice to help them be successful in the classroom. My students need multiple experiences with the same content to help them understand new concepts and how to apply the information. They are simply amazing workers! I am preparing them to be successful in school and in life.
My Project
To be successful with reading, my students need very thorough assessments to show what foundational skills they are missing. They need remediation and specialized instruction to help them close skill gaps. If reading fluency is an issue, for example, I have to find out if the student reads slowly because they need to read in phrases or if the student is a slow reader because he or she does not know how to sound-out the words?
Once I know the missing skill, the Words Their Way books will allow me to individualize my teaching.
The workbooks have different levels so they will provide guided practice activities. These range in skills so I can help lower and higher readers grow.
