I teach Kindergarten in a low income school. Some of us are learning letter identification, while others are blending words and reading stories. We have a lot of individual and small group instruction. Students practice skills at their level independently throughout the day as well.
I teach Kindergarten in a low income school.
More than half of my students come to school "not ready" for Kindergarten, according to state mandated assessments. I also have students who are at or above level. My school is very diverse. I have 13 English Language Learners in my class. We have over 60 countries represented in our school. There are students from 8 different countries in my class.
We spend much of our day in small group instruction, focused on students' needs. While we are teaching small groups, other students are practicing at their own levels. Apple offers applications for letter identification, number identification, sound blending, and math skills. Students who are beginning to read independently can read stories on the iPad.
By allowing more opportunity for independent practice, the iPad will help my students gain the skills they need to be good readers.
They will also be able to practice addition and subtraction. By sharpening their math skills, they will move toward proficiency in math as well.
