Thank you for taking the time to learn about this beautiful and bright group of 1st graders. This group of reading enthusiasts is located in the heart of Wyoming. Here, families struggle with job employment and poverty. This leads to a lot of kids having to grow up quickly. However, when they walk into my classroom, they are future authors, doctors or police officers. They dream about landing on the moon or digging up dinosaur fossils.
Regardless of home situations, this group of students is curious, kind, and motivated to do their best!
They love trying to tackle challenging math problems. My little ones love to nestle up in a special spot by themselves or with a partner and read and/or listen to stories. I even give them the opportunity to take over as the teacher in order to strengthen leadership skills.
Again, thank you for taking the time to learn about my group of students. I hope you fell in love with them as much as I have!
My Project
Every day, my students are required to use the strategies they have learned to read independently with ability appropriate text. Unfortunately, I do not have a large number of books for my students that are struggling to read at a first grade level.
This collection of leveled readers will target these groups of students that are still developing reading skills and gaining the confidence to read independently.
At this point in the year, these students are struggling to use reading strategies to decode more complex words, compared to their peers on grade level. These books will provide interest as well as words that are in their range of abilities.
This collection is ability-appropriate and will allow my students to practice fluency, accuracy and word recognition. The collection of books will help my children love to read and master the following Common Core State Standards: RF.1.4a Read Grade-level text with purpose and understanding; RF.1.4b Read grade-level text orally with accuracy, appropriate rate, and expression; RF.1.4c Use context to confirm or self-correct word recognition and understanding, rereading as necessary.
