My Students
My students are budding writers, scientists, doctors, teachers, and life-long learners. They just don't know it yet! Instilling a love of reading and learning will unlock their potential. More than half of my students are from low-income families. Many will be first generation college students. Reading will show them the opportunities available to them. Unfortunately, reading is not encouraged in their homes and also competes with digital devices. Showing them ways that makes reading fun will encourage them to read more independently.
My Project
My students LOVE to read with flashlights! We pick a favorite book, a cozy reading spot, turn off the lights, and turn on the flashlights. What better way to instill a love of reading? The comments I hear are: "This is so fun!", "I can do this at home!" BUT it's hard to turn the pages with a flashlight in your hand. Book lights that clip to the book would free up both hands for holding the book and turning the pages! Finding ways to make reading fun will help students become better readers and even more important, lifelong readers.
