My students need a portable Wheelchair accessible therapy garden center to support their academic growth and provide hands-on experiences.
If you cannot take a student to a garden then I say bring the garden to the student. Yes that is right, bring it indoors so that those who otherwise cannot, due to physical and medical disabilities can still experience gardening in a non-traditional way. Help our students see the work of their hands.
My students attend a regular neighborhood high school for grades 9-12.
They are in a self-contained class for students with severe and profound mental and physical handicaps. They range in age of 17-22. All but one of my students are non-ambulatory and require adult assistance for accessing their environment and feeding. Two of these students are fed via a gastrotomy tube. They are all non-verbal and communicate through non-symbolic means such as:gestures, vocalizations, sign language and or with assistive technological communication devices. They learn like everyone else and have access to the general curriculum with modifications and accommodations that supports their individual learning needs.
Having a portable wheelchair accessible garden center in my room will provide the adaptations needed so that these students with severe disabilities can participate daily and engage in hands on life long experiences. These experiences will further support their learning in reading, math, science and most importantly their independent living skills. I will be able to expand their cooking activities to include items grown in the garden. This will help students transfer the concept of "from ground to table"-what they planted and grew can be used to cook with. Other activities will include charting growth for math and science lessons, picture books will be created of each student as they engage in all steps of gardening to support reading lessons and independent functioning activities through daily work assignment charts.
Please help me do the best I can to provide access to the best learning opportunities just by supporting this project.
This project will allow teaching of all functional academic and independent living skills to be taught everyday without limitations of weather, physical accessibility, student health conditions and need for continuous assistance to participate. Having this Wheelchair Accessible Garden Cart will allow me to bring learning to my students and not the other way around.Read More
