My Students

Remember being a middle school student and the changes that came with meeting new friends, new teachers, and greater academic expectations as you make the transition from the only school and peers you have ever known as an elementary student to merging with peers from six other county elementary schools? How about the difference in your bussing situation and the need for increased independence? This change can be hard for every student--especially difficult for students with autism and intellectual disabilities.

The students need a way to manage their stress and anxiety on their on terms.

My classroom of students with intellectual disabilities and autism makes for an exciting day with challenges. As the students transition from the mid-set of elementary students to the independence of high school students in a couple of years, one of the classroom goals is for the students to be able to seek out self calming techniques to improve their ability to manage their own emotions.

My Project

Research and personal experiences have shown students with autism seek out "pressure" as a calming technique when upset and stressed. The students will ask others to squeeze their hands, wrap them in a blanket, or use a item of weight to increase the feeling of security. Many times the student will ask for "more" since the human component of the pressure is different in each situation. This steamroller will give students the opportunity to meet their sensory needs and be able to adjust the pressure to a steady consistent feel each time. The construction is hardy so the steamroller can be used for many years for many students.

The opportunity for a student with autism and intellectual disabilities to be self-determined in their own life is powerful.
