After being in the classroom for 10 years, I have learned that students are much more responsive to non traditional forms of teaching and learning. Students love to play games and compete against each other to find answers. When done in a non threatening way, competition can be very energizing and productive. Teaching math can be challenging for students entering the middle school setting. I teach at a public school in a rural area of Louisiana. Our parish has high expectations for both its teachers and students. Multiplication facts are essential for success in math. However, students need a fun and relevant way to memorize them. Personal sized white boards with erasers and dry erase markers are one way that this goal can be achieved. I would like to have a class set (35) of white boards (10in x 12in), dry erase markers and erasers. Having these materials would enable me to challenge students to learn their facts by games and fun classroom competitions. They would also be used to get away from the traditional pencil and paper work. I think that students would be motivated and excited to use this type of materials to complete daily assignments as well as play games for the purpose of memorizing multiplication facts.
