My Students
We are a Charter School offering all Advanced Placement Classes to a wide variety of students, many of whom will be first in their families to attend college. Our students tend to be economically challenged, but highly motivated.
The students here are highly dedicated to going and completing a four year university. They are chosen by a lottery to attend. We are the best high school in Oklahoma. They are motivated and spend countless hours in the library as we do not have computers in the classroom. Not having a library budget, new items cannot be purchased.
My Project
Since my school is primarily Hispanic and African American, it is difficult for them to relate to many of the novels we have in our collection. There are many new books written for this demographic, but I do not have a budget to buy them.
These award winning books will bring stories about their culture to my Hispanic and African American students, encouraging even the reluctant reader to enjoy reading. It is very important that all students see their lives reflected in the books they read. This project will allow them to do just that. This will also allow teachers to lead discussions on various cultures.
