My students are identified as students in need of special education supports. Additionally many are dually identified as English Language Learners. All of them are seeking to graduate from High school and some go on to community college or directly into the workforce.
My Students mean the world to me and making connections with them is so very important.
I often have them for multiple courses throughout their high school careers. Offering them as many tools to make them successful builds their confidence and hopefully can break down some of the barriers they already experience.
Thank you for any and all support you can offer!
My Project
This Year I will be teaching courses in a new way within the English department with Special Education students. This is a very exciting opportunity for both the students and me! The course will be heavy in writing- it will be English 1 with Freshmen as well as Freshman Writing/Literacy. The most exciting part is that I will have the students all year long. Because we have block scheduling we have a 4x4 schedule and most classes are only a semester long. The hard part with that is, by the time my students get comfortable the semester ends and it can be hard for them to have shown what they truly know.
Making connections with my students is key to their success!
Freshman year is critical for making connections in the school. By having them in class all year, I will be able to take more time with my students addressing their areas of disabilities within the area of literacy and writing. Writing can be a daunting task for many of them. The addition of a classroom printer will give the students the ability to instantly print out and edit their work. The more they are able to do this and become better writers, the more successful they will feel, and the better they will feel about their abilities. Currently, students are either going to different places in the school where they can print and pick up their work, losing valuable time (especially if things don't print for whatever reason) Or I make a trip to the teacher's printer 1 or 2 times a day and the students wait until the next class to edit.
This tool is going to prove to be extremely beneficial to the students and I feel will help improve outcomes.
