Help me give my students tools to calm down when they are upset with STEM puzzles and resources that will engage their minds so that they can shift their focus when they are angry.
I teach students in a title I school in central Florida. I work mostly students in grades kindergarten through 2nd grade with an occasional student in an intermediate grade. I work with lowest students in our school who need assistance in reading, math, independent functioning, behavior and social skills.
I work with students on IEPs who lack social skills and have behavioral concerns.
I want to help them exceed both academically and socially. I believe you can not educate a child until they are ready to learn. Until they are ready they will continue to make minimal progress and growth.
My Project
I am asking for a variety of resources to help my students control their emotions. I have chosen several different types of fidgets that my students can have with them in class so when they are upset they can use taught self soothing techniques. They can focus on their fidget and not on what is making them upset.
These fidgets and STEM Puzzles will help give my students the power to control themselves and de-escalate independently.
I have selected several STEM puzzles. I have had great success with using them with students who are upset as a distraction technique. They will engage with the puzzle and begin to calm down. I have students who will ask for them when they are upset! I want to provide them with more variety and spread them out throughout the school.
