Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach pre-school students who are diagnosed with autism. Students enter my program when they turn three years old and stay with me until they are five, then move on to kindergarten. We work with them using Discrete Trials to directly teach new skills that our students do not pick up naturally like their typical peers. We also use Floortime techniques to work on social skills and to generalize the skills taught during discrete trials. We use a variety of methods to teach our kids to communicate, including picture symbols, sign language and assistive technology.
Early Childhood Education is especially important for our autistic preschoolers.
Our students come in with a variety of needs. We work on group and social skills as well as individualized work which are both done on a daily basis. We teach them skills they will need to be successful in school in their later school years. They need to learn to sit and attend, to respond to their name when called, to respond to simple directions and to make requests appropriately among many other skills. This foundation is critical for success and growth as they move on to elementary school.
My Project
In my pre-k classroom of students with autism, my three and four-year-old children are mainly non-verbal. The inability to communicate is the greatest challenge my students face daily. Imagine not being able to make your needs and wants known to others? Anxiety, frustration and anger are common behaviors that my kiddos experience because they have no words, no voice.
Voice output communication devices allow my students to fully participate in meaningful classroom activities, such as Circle Time!
With the aid of TalkBook Four every child will have a voice to participate in circle time activities, such as Calendar, Weather and Who's Here Today" activities!
