Help me give my students some tools that they can use in a calm corner in our classroom that will help them regulate their emotions when they get overwhelmed in the classroom.
My students are first graders. They live in a large urban area, and a large number of students receive free and reduced-price lunch. They are such kind and determined kids.
My students are a group of very eager and excited learners.
They work hard, and look forward to coming to school each day. They are interested in EVERYTHING and want to learn as much about all that they can! I know they are looking forward to being able to interact with something new in the classroom!
My Project
A calm corner is a safe space in our classroom where students can go to take a break when the classroom gets to be too overwhelming for them. There are calming resources like coloring, fidget toys, and a quiet space away from others in the calm corner. Students learn how to utilize each of the resources early on so that they can choose something that works for them when they use the calm corner.
Calm corners can make the difference in a child being engaged and wanting to learn and a child who emotionally and mentally checks out because they are overwhelmed.
