Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I teach at a Title I school where nearly all of our students qualify for free or reduced lunch. My school is located in a neighborhood that has a variety of challenges and many of my students have multiple sources of trauma with which to deal.
Each year I have students in our class who are struggling readers and I have not been adequately trained to teach them the skills they need to read at grade level.
For example, this year I have one student who still cannot decode CVC words, such as "cat." These students need direct and explicit multisensory phonics and phonemic awareness instruction.
As a result of Emily Hanford's recent reporting about the Science of Reading, I have been investigating ways in which I can get the training I need to be able to teach these students how to read. This is my goal with this professional development project.
My Project
The Comprehensive Training provides participants with an in-depth understanding of IMSE's Orton-Gillingham methodology over the course of 30 hours. This course is a more traditional OG approach that focuses primarily on phonological awareness and phonics (along with encoding/decoding). Participants will also discuss how to teach fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension using the OG philosophy of multi-sensory, sequential, direct instruction. This approach can be incorporated into an already existing literacy program as well as stand alone.
This particular training is based on the science of reading and is proven to help all children learn to decode.
It is especially helpful for students who are dyslexic, but it is based on best practices for teaching all students.
