My students love to feel successful! In my classroom, they are given that chance to fail, fix it, and succeed. I always tell them: I can accept failure, but I cannot accept not trying.
I am the Intermediate EBD (Emotional Behavior Disabilities) teacher for our school.
Our school has over 60% students on free and reduced lunch. Most of my students work on or above grade level however, they have to learn social skills and behavior management techniques to get them back into a general education classroom. My room primarily focuses on behavior management and we do this through social stories, social situations, constant positive redirection, and real life examples.
My Project
In order for my students to be successful, we use a variety of educational as well as "earned time" materials. Through the use of comprehension games, my students will be able to work on crucial reading skills while also working on social skills, through the use of games and taking turns. Most of my students prefer hands-on learning to paper and pencil and these games will give them the chance to do just that.
As well, the board games will be used for earned time, as well they also provide a social skills lesson, as they work on following rules, taking turns, and losing without getting angry.
As my students get their behaviors under control more and more each day, these items will help them continue to be successful while working on their social skills.
Getting their behaviors under control is how they are able to earn more time in a general education setting and eventually get them out of the class full time, which is our goal.
