Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

In our class, we've learned that genius is built through hard work, extending our interests, perseverance and following our passions.

My classroom hosts a new grade level of academically-talented students each day.

The students in this "Challenge" program work with advanced content and thinking skills. They have big ideas, lots of interests and many different stories. They also have differing backgrounds, experiences and experiences with school. All together, they are the leaders and high-level learners in our urban, diverse school.

My Project

One segment of our program is called "Genius Hour" and is a time for students to follow a personal interest. After researching, learning and exploring, students present their projects to their peers for review. Many of my students are interested in construction of technology and robotics but I lack the materials to support their interests. These materials will allow my students to explore topics they're excited about, such as building rockets, competing with each other to build the fastest car, and programming robots. These technology skills will be extremely useful in their futures and will help them understand that school isn't just a place to learn what others think they need to know but also a place where they can determine what they learn.

Technology.

Excitement. Innovation. Perseverance. All great words, all things we want our children to learn and understand. This project has the potential to spur the next Thomas Edison or Bill Gates. That may be a long shot, but it will definitely keep students learning, growing and thriving in my classroom.
