This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My Students
As an inner city child, I would walk to the library and read books that introduced me to others places and ideas. Reading changed my life. Many of my students have not yet experienced the joy of reading and the benefits that come from being a life long reader and learner. We can change that!
All of my students have great potential.
Reading is the key to opening their minds and that potential.
Mark Twain once said, "The man who does not read books has no advantage over the man who can't read them!"
Not only should we teach students to read, but we must foster in them a love and habit of reading.
They should read for fun and learning. I Am Smart ! I Read ! is a program that encourages kids to read for fun, while learning key skills at the same time.
My students are making gains on achievement tests and our emphasis on reading helps them to keep making positive growth.
My Project
Kids love electronics! I have requested mp3 players. I want to reward my great readers with incentive gifts that signal to them how rewarding reading can be. Once a child begins to read, it grows on them and finally becomes something that they will do for their entire life, your support will "pay it forward" because these incentives will help to develop life long readers, who succeed in their school work and in life. Mortimer J. Adler is quoted as saying, "Reading is a basic tool in the living of a good life." This is so true today, every job in the future requires reading, comprehension, and text based information. With your help, we are going to develop strong readers who love a good book.
