Dr. Guevarra from Baltimore MD is requesting computers & tablets through DonorsChoose, the most trusted classroom funding site for teachers.
Help me give my students in Robotics five (5) new Chromebooks to help them explore robotic software to design and program their robots to do basic and advanced maneuvers., and to create presentation of their project.
This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.
My students are African-American male students from the economically disadvantaged areas of Baltimore City. They are 9th-12th grade students who are competitive and energetic. They come to class with full of enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Although some of them appear to be tech savy with their experience in playing mobile games, they generally lack computer literacy.
As eager as they are to learn, they are also easily frustrated with things that are out of their control, such as crashing or slow laptops.
But they are determined in problem-solving when they know the have the resources they need to solve it.
These Chromebooks will help my students in my Robotics class design their robots and create computer programs to make their robots perform basic and advanced maneuvers. Designing and programming a robot form the foundation of learning in every robotics class.
Currently, my robotics class of 25 students are sharing on 7 very old and slow computers.
The programs run too slow and sometimes they hang. The batteries of these laptops are too old that the laptops need to be charged frequently during class.
These inconveniences can be too frustrating to students that sometimes they lose interest in learning and just give up.
These additional laptops will result to a more independent learning. Because of limited resources, the students have to be in groups of three or four in order to share laptops. This set up oftentimes reduces some students to mere spectator as their group mate does the computer work and they watch. With these additional Chromebooks, more students will have access to computers and will result into greater learning in programming and higher computer literacy in general.
