Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
The students at our school are encouraged every day to, "read, read, read." This can be challenging for students with autism. It is especially challenging when certain life skills such as working independently or in a large group are involved with classroom reading.
I teach primary grade students with autism.
Not only do my students need academic instruction, but they also need a curriculum that integrates various life skills into the curriculum. They need to learn how to act appropriately in a group. They need to learn how to do things independently and, of course, they need to learn to read!
My Project
The literacy materials I am requesting will help my students in each of these areas. The King Series leveled readers (Townsend Press), are perfectly designed to help my students learn to read. They are leveled so each student can read at his or her instructional level. They are high interest, so the students will remain engaged and excited about learning to read. The Tag books (Leap Frog) are perfect for encouraging independent learning. The students can use the Tag pens to read along, hear words again, etc. Most importantly, they can do this without assistance! The big books are ideal for whole group reading. They kids can see the pictures, and even the words from a distance. It increases their attention to the instruction and they don't become distracted. It not only provides them an opportunity to listen to reading, but it also helps them learn appropriate behavior for a whole group learning situation.
When you help a student with autism, you don't just help one student.
You help a family, a classroom community, a neighborhood, and the community at large. Literacy is an important skill, but the dual curriculum for a student with autism is equally important. This project will help me take care of both!
