My Students

Teach with the digital edge. My students can read all about electronic music, analyze films and how the music impacts the story line, but actions speak louder than words. In English the students create poems about themselves & in music we take pictures, their poems, music, voice & set it to film.

We are a public school that is located in the county.

The students are in my 8th grade general music class. Generally, in a class of 30, I will have only 5 girls and in a typical year I have 3 sections with 26-30 students. To help motivate this group I like to work with hands on projects. Working in the digital and combining that with the music they love helps to encourage their participation.

My Project

These students have already created a poem about themselves in English. With that poem, students bring in images or in many cases we find images or scan the ones that match their poem that is about themselves. Now we need to read our poems over the moving pictures and that is why we need the microphones. From free music websites, we find a match to their poem and blend into the background. The final project is burned to a DVD and the students have something to share with their family and friends. The pride they all share is great for their self confidence. Right now we have only 3 microphones and we use the built in computer microphones(5) for this project. However, students lack self-confidence and the computer mics just do not pick them up as well as the USB microphones.

The donations to this project will help the students to create a better project than without the microphones.

It will also allow them to spend more time perfecting their project. Right now they must hurry through so that another student can complete and use the microphones. Students learn by doing and although we can read the books and answer questions, we learn so much more by actually doing what we read about.

This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
