Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My school is dedicated to serving disadvantaged children, children at risk, and children at risk of cultural alienation in mainstream schools, particularly urban youth. We seek to cultivate wise, community-engaged and internationally-minded youth, ready to assume leadership and champion their communities’ causes; specifically when it comes to community health and/or mental health.
Our educational program uniquely advances critical pedagogy, curriculum and methodologies expanded by the Sustainable Business and Finance perspectives through the implementation and the Conscious Capitalism (labor/environment practices) for grades nine through twelve.
Our school prepares students to meet the A-G requirements through purposefully aligned courses. We offer an inquiry-based, CCSS aligned, curricular continuum with a Sustainable Business and Finance pathway.
My Project
These books, "I Am Not Your Mexican Daughter", by Erika Sanchez and "Love, Hate and Other Filters" by Samira Ahmed will enrich my Ethnic Studies and Theatre students. I strive to create a culturally responsive and diverse learning environment for my students. These books have been chosen with my marginalized students in mind because the many themes of these two book are identity, immigration, nationality and gender. With these books they will enjoy reading and performing because they are so well written and relevant to youth growing up bi-culturally in modern times.
With these new books, my students will be able to learn about youth like themselves who are dealing with identity, gender norms, relationships with parents and siblings, and surviving in schools both academically and emotionally.
One book is about a Mexican American young woman and the other is about an Indian American muslim. Both deal with issues our students deal with in modern times.
The best way to increase reading ability is to read more, and these book swill help my students grow stronger in reading because they are such engaging and high-interest reads. My students already have shown an astonishing interest in reading due to such works as "Simply Maria or the American Dream", and these two books will only help continue to enrich their experiences with literature written by authors who looks like them and come from a similar background as well.
