I teach in an inner-city, self-contained English classroom for high schoolers. Not only do I teach students with special needs, many of my students are also English language learners, who are from the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Jamaica, and Nigeria.
The biggest struggle for me as a first-year teacher has been trying to figure out how to reach all my students when they're at such vastly different reading levels.
I have students who are still learning how to read in a class with students who are reading at a 6th-grade reading level or higher. My students are all extremely eager to learn to read better, and I'm hopeful this project will help them do that!
My students need these books for group reading instruction in world literature. This book is important to us because it is funny, culturally relevant, and my students want to read something that is current.
One of the biggest challenges as a teacher is finding reading material that truly engages students, and this book is timely, humorous, and perfect to read aloud as a small group.
I have students who are currently still learning to read, and I also have students who are reading just one or two grades below level. Reading aloud together as a group is extremely helpful because it challenges my higher-level readers to read aloud, and it also helps my lower-level readers to follow along and expand their vocabulary!
