My students need Hokki stools, lap desks and comfy floor seats to create a flexible seating classroom in order to address their specific learning styles.
Most of my first graders live in small studios in an old apartment building where they share communal bathrooms and kitchens with other families. Every year on the first day of school, I always assign a homework in which students have to draw their favorite spot to read. Many of them turned in pictures of themselves reading NOT on a special couch, beanbag, pillow but on an ordinary chair. Some said they don't even have books at home.
Though the children I serve might not live in a spacious home and own luxurious items, these children wear a smile to school everyday eager and ready to learn.
First day of school is coming around the corner for my incoming first graders and I can visualize their little curious eyes as they enter their new classroom. Since they spend a big chunk of their days in school, I want them to have the best learning environment.
My Project
Many of my first graders have trouble staying in their chairs but that does not mean they are not capable of learning and completing their work. Grown-ups get to choose where they can focus best such as a coffee shop, a library or stand-up station at work but children are rarely given that choice.
Every classroom is provided with 22-35 of the same kind of hard, plastic chairs but our students have different learning styles.
I have done a lot of research on the benefits of having Hokki stools, lap desks and comfy floor seats in the classroom. Benefits include fostering students' ability to take ownership of their learning. They have to decide where they learn best by choosing a smart spot to work and stay focused. Many of my students don't have to opportunities to make choices at home. Another benefit of flexible seating it to improve engagement. For those students who feel restless, the Hokki chairs would allow them to wiggle and burn off some of their excessive energy.
By incorporating alternative seating options for my students, my students will have the opportunity to learn in their best environment. All the tables have been set up and all we need are the different choices of seating options!
