Celebrate Black Teachers and Students

This project is part of the Black History Month celebration because it supports a Black teacher or a school where the majority of the students are Black.

My Students

My school is a Title I school. Most of my students come from lower socioeconomic homes. They are very bright and sweet and love to learn. My students are also language delayed. Most of them are learning disabled and are in Special Education classes within the community public school. Their learning comes with difficulty due to their speech delays and learning disabilities, but they fight on and work hard!

I love books.

Nothing makes me happier then a feeling and smell of a new book in my hands, nothing except for seeing my darling children light up when they receive gifts of new books from me; nothing, except them coming back wanting to discuss the book in class; and nothing, except seeing them fall in love with a book!

My Project

Today, my students and I read TIME for Kids articles. On the last page the magazine spoke about a book by Derrick Barns which tackles the misrepresentation of African American boys, I Am Every Good Thing! One of my darling students said, "That book would be perfect for my brother; I wish I could get it for him!" She is right! As a teacher of African American boys in a classroom of only African American boys, I have a privilege of teaching the new generation of Black boys. It is my duty as a teacher to raise them up and show them how special they are! Please, help me give my boys this wonderful book.
