We are a Title I school with more than 85% of students receiving free lunch. Our school is home to many students currently in foster care or transitional homes. Our classroom is also a diverse bunch with students from 3 different home nations and 3 different languages spoken.
Although our building has a high rate of mobility, our students crave and deserve the very best!
My students are nothing short of resilient and work super hard to defy the obstacles that have been put before their little eyes.
My Project
This year my students and I have embarked on a journey to participate in "Classroom Book a Day." By reading one picture book aloud to my class each day, I am able to help students deal with a multitude of social emotional topics and teach skills for working through many of these situations. As of present, we have read 100 books on social emotional topics.
My students need access to more social emotional themed books to continue to strive in their own circumstances.
These picture books have helped to create a positive classroom climate with students who are not only eager to read but who are also becoming comfortable with themselves.
Social emotional children's books have helped to teach resilience, accepting others' differences, finding common ground, working through loss and divorce and handling big emotions, among many other topics. Social emotional children's books are powerful and very much so needed in our classroom.
