Our school is in an urban area in Virginia. We take pride in being the most diverse elementary school in our district and represent approximately 30 different languages spoken by our students. Our students and teachers love books and learning about cultures through books.
We want to recognize culturally responsive teaching practices, as a way to engage all students no matter their background.
Along with motivating our students to read books they enjoy, our teachers are always working to increase our students' academic achievement and social-emotional skills. We are proud of our school community.
My Project
I am respectfully requesting professional development resources for me and my colleagues, in order for us to become culturally responsive teachers. As we read and discuss these books, we will better understand how to engage our students academically and with compassion as we delve into issues of race, culture and socio-economic status. In addition, we will better understand these issue in America culture and education.
As teachers, we are life-long learners, and it is imperative that we continue to understand the history and cultures of the students we teach in our classrooms.
Your generous donations will provide a greater understanding across cultures and of history for teachers of students of color.
