I am an 8Th grade ELA teacher at a school that has been affected by Hurricane Katrina. Every child in my classroom was forced from their home, some still not able to return to their home due to damage or total destruction. I very much want my students to realize that even though much has been taken away from them, they still have so much to give. With the "I am an Author" project, students are able to write and illustrate their original stories. Their stories are then sent away to be bound into a hardcover book. Each child receives their own book that contains their story, their illustrations, their ideas, their thoughts, and their progress as a writer. This project, like no other, shows them that even though they are young, even though they read well below grade level, they can be an author. The materials needed for this project are few. Since each book is typed, only printer ink is needed as typing paper will be provided. The book covers come with the appropriate binding materials. This project truly shows children a physical representation of hard work. All the time spent writing, proofreading, editing, typing, and drawing was well worth the result of having people read and enjoy their story.
