My Students

Inspire a child! Help me inundate them with examples of brilliant, courageous, and persistent people who look just like them.

My school is a small oasis of hope in a high-poverty, high-violence area.

My students are bright and curious, but also easily frustrated. They struggle to stay engaged in school, and have few role models for school success. We are working very hard to create a strong learning community that expects academic success.

My Project

If this project is funded, each child in the class will be able to hold a beautiful and inspiring book in their hands. Both Frederick Douglass and Bessie Coleman pursued education relentlessly. As we read these books and look for interesting academic vocabulary, learn to write summaries, and learn to identify the qualities that make someone a scholar, students will have the opportunity to envision themselves as such scholars.

Every day, my students recite a pledge that we wrote together that begins and ends with, "I am a scholar.

I come from a long line of scholars." Help me prove to them that academic achievement is their birthright.
