Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Jaqueline and Ashley and Maria want to learn how to do calligraphy after looking through the books in the art room. Writing as an art has been lost with the computers and type fonts that are perfect. These 3 students have never done calligraphy and it is very exciting to them to be able to try this.
I have lots of calligraphy books at school. I showed these students the calligraphy I did when I was in college. They were interested so we watched a video on YouTube showing an artist doing calligraphy and they wanted to try right away. I showed them what to do with writing for the materials and books with DonorsChoose, org, to do a unit on calligraphy this year before they graduate from middle school. I think it will tie in with their graduating from middle school and making their graduation announcements. We are doing a unit on making cards and graphic design and careers in art that we can also tie in calligraphy and the history of calligraphy.
These 3 students have sketchbooks they fill with their drawings and they use writing in their drawings. If they learn calligraphy they can use this in their drawings as well. Handmade, using your hands, is important to do and not forget with technology. They can also use the iPads in the class to look at different styles of calligraphy.
Calligraphy is an art and takes patience, perseverance, dealing with failure and following through on learning something you want to know how to do. Having success in this project will definitely lead to confidence in other areas of their education where you have to be patient, persevere, deal with obstacles and follow through to reach a goal. It will also give them confidence in real-life problem solving. They will learn if they don't give up there is a reward of beautiful calligraphy writing that is enjoyed by people that receive the words and writing. Being successful in this one area is a small step to taking bigger steps. Building on this success will translate to confidence in college and careers and life's ups and downs, I hope.
In Their Own Words
Our project idea is to get books, pens, paper and have our teacher teach us calligraphy. We want to be able to write in all different types of calligraphy. We think the whole class will have fun learning calligraphy. We have tried it with regular pens but it would be better with real calligraphy pens.
The goals we want to accomplish are learning Gothic calligraphy and modern calligraphy. We want to learn about what types of calligraphy writing there are.
We will be leaders in bringing this project to life by learning how to do calligraphy before the class and then helping them learn how to use the pens and books. We could take home the books and practice at home also. We could make a video of how to draw each letter. We could try the different types of calligraphy before the class tries them. My friends do not even know what calligraphy is. We could make examples to show them.
The school does not have any calligraphy pens and it has not been part of the art class before. It would make the class more interesting to do calligraphy and would make it a better class if my friends try something they haven't tried before. Calligraphy is beautiful and important to try something new at school. Everything is computers and it important to do art without computers. When there is a power outage we can still make art.
