I am a 2nd grade teacher in a low-income, high poverty school district in the South Bronx. It is a public elementary school with 613 students from grades pre-kindergarten through grade 5. My class is filled with 30 vibrant, eager learners who require a variety of ways to learn. About 60% of my students are performing below grade level.
My students face many challenges each day.
They come from a community filled with homelessness and crime. For many of them, I am the only comfort, security, and positive source in their life. I want to make my students feel welcomed, appreciated, loved, and know that they can do anything they put their minds to. I want to equip them with the resources they need to be successful lifelong learners.
My Project
Prevention is better than a cure!
Many of my students suffer from asthma and various allergies.
As the seasons change many of my student come to school sneezing, coughing, and with runny noses. I do not want my students to miss school because they are not feeling well and I do not want the other students in the classroom to get sick from being exposed to the germs and allergens that live in the air.
Sometimes the classroom is not cleaned to my satisfaction; therefore, it my duty to make sure my students come to a classroom that is thoroughly cleaned, sanitized, and smelling fresh. I clean their desks/tables and chairs, wipe the book shelves and bins that often get dusty, and clean our classroom bathroom daily.
Our classroom needs to be equipped with cleaning supplies, facial tissue, disinfectant wipes, hand sanitizer, hand soap, and paper towels. I want to promote good hygiene habits amongst my students.
My students attendance and learning is very important to me and having a healthy environment is a start to ensuring that they will not miss school because they are not feeling well.
