Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
All of my students are Beginner English students who have been in the Boston Public Schools for six months or fewer. Our student population represents countries from all around the world. My students are curious, inquisitive and hardworking. They are so inspiring! In addition to learning the English language, my students actively engage in our Science English Language Learners curriculum. Many of my students support themselves financially and sustain part-time jobs in addition to school.
Many of my students have experienced hardships or witnessed violence yet they are committed to their education and dream of successful careers in which they will contribute to making our world a better, safer and more peaceful place.
My Project
BHS is a HUB school providing wrap-around services for all areas of need to our students. We provide warm clothes and access to medical care in the school. We have just established an outdoor raised bed garden for seasonal gardening.
We are bringing the food stability initiative indoors to demonstrate growing green leafy herbs and vegetables all winter with hydroponic garden centers.
The materials will be integrated into a newcomer English as a New Language Science class in order to provide authentic as well as hands-on activities to learn English and the language of science.
