Bright, inquisitive and beautiful; welcome to paradise! Most people think of Kauai as just that. These words describe not only the island I teach on, but the students I engage with every day in my classroom. Full of youthful energy and curiosity, these kids constantly ask a familiar question many of us are familiar with.
"What are we doing today?" is a common question I hear at the end of each of my classes.
My goal is to be able to give my students as much effective and engaging learning opportunities I can with the resources I have to promote their academic and technical growth both inside the classroom and out.
My Project
This project will provide an opportunity to literally transform the traditional classroom into a hands-on learning environment. Students will engage in three distinct elements of the business process (sourcing products, enhancing products, and marketing products) by growing their own produce with these hydroponic growing kits, preparing their products in our on-site school kitchen classroom, and marketing their products to the local and visitor community around us.
With this project, students in my class will be given a chance to learn the fundamentals of business, agriculture, food production, and kitchen safety.
Students will utilize CTE-Business skills while documenting their learning experience through personalized journals and learning logs. In addition, students will demonstrate academic learning through formative and summative assessments in the areas of hydroponics, kitchen safety, business finance, and marketing. This project will provide for a continuation of my current CTE Business project that began this past academic school year and will allow my CTE Business course to continue to evolve and grow for many years. With this project, I will continue to be able to provide hands-on, educational experiences to inspire our next generation of entrepreneurs to succeed in the world of business.
