My students often call it "playing"...I call it learning! In my 2nd grade classroom, we are always on the move to stimulate engagement in authentic learning experiences! Students flow from desks to carpets, to additional classroom tables often throughout the day.
My students are curious, thoughtful, and enthusiastic learners who inspire me to continue to think outside the box when creating learning experiences for them!
My daily goal is to keep that energy burning for learning and inspire them to pursue their passions.
My Project
My classroom has been invited to participate in the pilot of the South Carolina Biodiscovery project, a project funded by the Bosch Community Fund and coordinated by the Charleston County Park and Recreation Commission in partnership with the South Carolina Sea Grant Consortium, College of Charleston’s Grice Marine Lab, and Clemson University Cooperative Extension Service. As a part of this project, my students will be involved in a hands on STEM exploration of microscopic communities that colonize in our nearby marsh water. My classroom will be placing a series of discs in a our marsh habitat to collect and compare data about what "grows" on our discs throughout the year. An essential tool for being a part of this project is microscopes.
"Early science education is essential for raising future scientists!" My goal is that by being a part of the Biodiscovery Project and adding microscopes to my classroom, It will authentically engage my students in doing, seeing, thinking, questioning, and discussing in a hands on way.
My students will be using their natural curiosity to learn about organisms that live right here in our Charleston marsh habitat. Not everything that lives in our habitat can be seen with our own eyes! My hope is that this project helps nurture my students' curiosity and raises an early interest in the students for becoming scientists.
