Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
I truly believe my terrific, inquisitive 3rd graders are capable of reaching their academic goals. I love seeing their faces light up as they learn new math, science, and literacy skills.
My students live in and attend school in a high poverty area and many come from single parent families who can't afford life essentials such as food, clothing, and shelter.
At our school, 100% of the students qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Despite the challenges of poverty, they arrive at school eager and ready for the day's lessons and projects.
My Project
Although it is mid July our students have already been in school for a couple of weeks. Our school is located in a hot, dry climate with many days' temperatures about or over 100 degrees Fahrenheit.
High temperatures, along with staying active, make my students very thirsty.
My active students are already working up a sweat and drinking lots of water. My students need 5-gallon water bottles, Otter pop popsicles, and drink packets in order to stay hydrated.
My daughter donated nice water bottles for every student in class. I've been sending them to the water fountain to fill up their water bottles, but have found that process is too time consuming. By having 5 gallon water bottles in our classroom, students will have easy access to water instead of leaving the classroom to fill up at the building's water fountain. Instead of thinking about how thirsty they are, they will focus on learning skills. I am also requesting Otter Pop popsicles and drink packets as cool treats for my students, which they would especially enjoy after playing out on the playground in this hot weather.
Students will improve their health by drinking water and forgoing unhealthy sugary drinks. My students' growing bodies need lots of water. They will be able to fill up their water bottle in class and reduce time off task.
By staying hydrated, students will be alert and improve their immune systems. Healthier immune systems mean fewer absences. Fewer absences means more learning, which will improve all academics. Please help my students beat the heat and stay hydrated.
