My students need access to toothpaste, deodorant, tampons, soap and other hygiene products to improve their quality of living which will allow them to feel comfortable and confident while at school.
The high school in which I teach is located in a rural community where it seems like everyone knows everyone. The majority of our staff members are former students and current community members which helps create the family atmosphere that exists at the school. Unfortunately, our high school was ravaged by flood waters and was later deemed unsafe for return. With no building to return to, we have been placed in a temporary location composed of portable buildings until our new school can be constructed, but this has not diminished the spirit of our students. They continue to amaze me with their ability to face and overcome obstacles.
I truly believe that it takes a village to raise a child, and, as a member of this village, I want to do everything possible to help my students feel confident and successful.
The majority of our students come from low income homes where the parents are often faced with the decision to feed their family or purchase hygiene products. Due to the flooding, all of our students receive free breakfast and lunch; however, the need for basic hygiene still exists.
My Project
I am developing a hygiene closet which will house basic hygiene items such as toothpaste, toothbrushes, soap, shampoo, deodorant, and more which will be available to students within our school. Students will be able to request items online all while maintaining a sense of anonymity. Once the requests have been submitted, they will be discretely packaged and distributed to the students.
Studies have shown that proper hygiene improves a student's comfort and confidence levels which, in turn, will lead to improved attendance as well as academic success.
My goal is to assist students by improving the availability of needed items.
