I serve the middle school students learning visual art in San Bernardino county. Three-fourths of our students are economically disadvantaged. We have our own counter-culture and feel to our community. The grunge desert road led to a quarry that set the backdrop on our inland plateau behind Southern California's sixty-five hundred-foot Bernardino mountain range art.
Students who struggle to participate in central tabletop craft and desk routines find their classroom connection to novel crafts like STEM toys, plastic maker printers, and rubber casting.
Art is the base station from which we deploy our exploration starting from paint, paper, and pencil, advancing beyond the ecosystem of self, social, environmental, and technical expression.
My Project
Give our art students a chance to play with and enjoy wrapping things with tape. This sculpture project starts with all students choosing an armful-sized object and wrapping tape its outside: sticky side out first then stuck side in coating second. The layered coats make hollow forms like a crushed crystal skin upon most any larger object: like stuffed animals and even body parts.
We are uphill battle struggling to keep the classroom clean: I limit paint to once a week cause it is too stressful catching up after.
A huge collection of sponges would make it so that everyone can do their part. We use masking tape for everything and there are some specific block out and masking paper layer projects we can't do unless every student has their own role: so maybe we can get these fun projects rolling one at a time here in San Bernardino.
