Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
Can you imagine the obstacles that a 102 year old school building poses for technology? Can you imagine being underprivileged, and new to this country with zero English? Can you then imagine your child having no heat or hot water for nearly 2 months, because of Hurricane Sandy? Welcome to TAS!
My students come from all parts of the world.
Mexico, Vietnam, Dominican Republic, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Haiti etc. For the most part, they have received little to no education from their homeland and about 99.99% enter our school district with no English or literacy in their own language. Our students attend a very hard working school. We are always a focus school because of our low test scores which measure our students against the rest of the state. While blaming the language and cultural divide between a school like ours and the rest would be easy, its a truth. Our teachers are always working a difficult uphill battle. Our teachers truly care for our families here at TAS. We organized and rallied for supplies and services from local area businesses in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. Many of our families and students continued to live in storm damaged homes and apartments well after the water receded.
My Project
My students need visual cues for support in learning English. Its amazing how many words I say that the average ESL student does not understand because listening and speaking is very difficult for them. I found it to be very important to have visuals that are essential for their learning and acquiring English as a second language. Having an iPAD for easy reference during whole group discussion on the carpet would be advantageous. Currently I use my iPhone and pass it around, which isn't very efficient!
My project is important for myself and my students.
Instant visual cues to move along a lesson is essential for delivering content and new vocabulary on the fly. This iPad will be used everyday during instruction with the whole group on the carpet, within small group instruction (guided reading) and 1 on 1 activities through educational apps. Having an iPad will make my job less complicated, more efficient and keep students engaged 100% more. Thanks so much for taking the time to read my project
