I am proud to be a librarian at a wonderful urban middle school in beautiful Brooklyn, NY. Sadly, our beautiful part of Brooklyn has been marred by the recent tragic and heartbreaking events of Hurricane Sandy.
I am hoping that this grant may help to ease some of the loss our students and in turn the library has felt due to the storm.
Not all the neighborhoods that were hit hard by Hurricane Sandy were told to evacuate. Therefore, many of our students and their families were caught unprepared for the devastation. Some lost everything and some lost a lot. Our school was spared, so it has provided a safe haven to these amazing young people as they and their families try to rebuild their lives.
My Project
As the days pass, students have been coming to me and telling me that their library books were lost or damaged by the hurricane. Normally, when library books are lost or students damaged we ask students to either pay or replace the lost books. But as this was of no fault of their own, we simply decided to mark the books lost and eat the cost. But as of yet, no additional funding has come through to replace these lost books and my students' desire to read has not diminished at all. That's where you come in. My students need books to replace some of the one lost/damaged by the hurricane.
My students are bright, energetic, and love to read!
With a little help and encouragement, they can overcome this tragic event and move forward to the wonderful world of High School. All they need is a little help from you.
