Hurricane Katrina Took Our Books on Tape to the Gulf of Mexico

Accelerated Reader is an integral part of our reading curriculum. That means that a student reads a book and then takes a test to ascertain if he/she comprehended the book. Our students are required to read with an 85% accuracy level, and their points required depends upon a Star Reading Test.
Most of our paperbacks/hardback books have been replaced through the generous donations of individuals, schools, and Donors Choose. However, I have not been able to recover books on tape for my students. The books on tape are valuable in the classroom because it encompasses listening comprehension, which, of course, is a life skill. All children enjoy being read to, which is one option with Accelerated Reader, and listening to books on tape allow all children to benefit from different levels of books. Through the use of books on tape, my students get to feel like they are on an equal level of those reading far above them.
My sixteen fourth grade students would benefit by adding books on tape to our "modular classroom" because it will enable them to use the tapes individually, with others, and with the entire class. I will also allow these tapes to be checked out and taken home. Students must pay close attention to the books in order to be able to take the AR test.
Given the opportunity to listen to books on tape will inspire my students to listen to learn, and it will increase their self esteem as everyone will be on the same level for this experience. Having lost everything in Hurricane Katrina, my students have not had the benefit of these tapes. It would be most appreciated if this proposal is funded.
