Hurricane Katrina devastated the landscape of our beautiful Gulf Coast. It has displaced tens of thousands of children who will not be able to start school in their hometown. This disaster has touched all of our lives.
As the children of PS 165 enter my fifth grade class this year they have the comfort of knowing what lies ahead for them in a classroom well stocked with the tools needed for learning. The children of the Gulf Coast don't have this luxury. They will enter classrooms that are overcrowded and foreign to them. The towns who have taken these children in are to be commended on their compassion.
The children here in NYC ask, "How can we help, we are so far away?"
We can help. We can provide the essential materials that we take for granted. If funded, this proposal will ensure that the hurricane victims will get the pencils, rulers, protractors, compasses, calculators, dictionaries, and paper they need. But even more they will get personal notes from my children to encourage them to have faith and endure the hard times.
The children of my class will learn to reach out and help others. No matter how hard their lives may seem, there are always others who need our help. Thank you for helping my class learn this valuable lesson.
