I am a fourth grade teacher in a public school in Brooklyn, New York. Since the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina has struck our country, I have spent the last week trying to think of ways to help the victims in any way possible. I have also spent a lot of time trying to think of creative ways to get my students involved in helping.
I believe that it is very important for young children to learn the importance of helping others in need. I am sure that my students have been watching the news and are aware of what's going on. I know that they have seen the heart-wrenching images of people's homes destroyed and floating away in water. Not only have children lost their homes, they have also lost their schools.
I am requesting a classroom care package of pencils, pens, paper, markers, and notebooks that the children affected by Hurricane Katrina have lost and will need to continue their schooling when they are able to get back to school.
The experience of receiving these materials which we will send, writing letters and cards, and reaching out to these children in need, will be very valuable to my students. Here in New York, after September 11th, our schools received letters from children all over the country expressing their remorse and sending well wishes to us. This is our opportunity to give back. Through this project, the students will learn the value of helping those in need. My students come from families who struggle to make ends meet and may not have the means themselves to make donations. Therefore, they will also learn, that even though we may not have money to donate, there are ways of helping others if we are creative. This is something that they will carry with them throughout their lives.
