Hurricane Help: Service Learning Trip to New Orleans
The cost of transportation to New Orleans, as well as a digital camera and photo paper is $1976, including shipping for the camera and paper and <a target="new" href="http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm" onclick="g_openWindow('http://www.donorschoose.org/html/fulfillment.htm', 300, 800, 'fulfillwindow');return false;">fulfillment</a>.
My students, like the rest of the nation, were paralyzed by grief and helplessness from the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina. We saw the images of destruction, read the stories of human triumph, and listened to pundits laying blame, but we were still to far to feel like we could make a difference in the lives of the Gulf residents.
This Spring, 12 of our students will have a chance to put their humanity into action by traveling to New Orleans to find out more about the civic history and aftermath of Katrina, connect with the youth of the region, and help a displaced New Orleans family rebuild their home.
The trip will take place during Intersession, a three week intensive when our whole school is dedicated to different PE and community-based mini-courses. In addition to the road trip, we will prepare for the trip by studying the cultural and civic history of New Orleans, as well as learning about the ecology of the area.
However, since New Orleans is much farther than Yosemite, we will need community support to make this trip happen! I have split up several different needs we have, from van rental to go cross-country, to materials for the students' documentaries, to covering lodging for the journey.
