I currently have 21 precious Kindergartners in my class. Our school is located in Orange, Texas. Our campus serves all students from Pre-K through 5th grade. We are located in a rural area in which 60% of our students are economically disadvantaged. Our campus also houses the district's elementary adaptive behavior classroom.
Our campus is currently in portable buildings as our classrooms are being rebuilt due to extensive flood damage caused by Hurricane Harvey.
We will remain in these portable buildings until our campus is fully restored. Many of our students had flood damage to their homes, and some are still displaced, as well. I am trying to slowly replace some of the shelves, furniture, and classroom supplies lost from Hurricane Harvey.
My Project
In August 2017, Hurricane Harvey brought flood waters that devastated our school. The flood waters ruined our classroom furniture and centers. Among the items lost were all of our big books and the storage cabinet they were in. All of the books were ruined from the water and mold grew all in the cabinet. We are in the rebuilding process right now and are trying to get things back to normal.
I have been able to replace many of our big books due to generous donations of retired teachers however we have no place to store them when they aren't being used nor do we have an easel to help support the big book that is being read.
It would be helpful to have a place to keep the big books to protect them from bending but still keep them accessible for the teacher and students. The easel will help support the book while we are diving into the book looking for rhyming words, sentence structure, sight words, as well as just enjoying the story.
